Hennepin Technical College LPN Program

This program is designed with hands-on learners in mind. Coursework covers a wide range of subjects, including pharmacology, psychosocial nursing, and fundamental patient care. Students move through a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experiences that reinforce critical thinking, communication skills, and holistic care delivery. It’s aligned with Minnesota Board of Nursing standards and prepares graduates for the NCLEX-PN licensure exam.

Additionally, Hennepin Tech offers both a diploma and an AAS degree track, giving students the flexibility to earn their LPN and later transfer credits toward an RN or BSN degree. The program runs on a cohort model with 48 students admitted each fall at Brooklyn Park and 48 more each spring at Eden Prairie. Classes are held during the day, and students should be ready for clinical shifts that could fall on weekdays, evenings, or weekends.

Courses must be taken in a specific sequence, and the program’s structure is rigid once you begin. Because of that, it’s best suited for students who can commit to a full-time schedule without major interruptions. The entire program lasts just two semesters, making it one of the fastest paths to becoming an LPN in the state.

Admission into the nursing program isn’t open enrollment—you’ll need to complete several prerequisites and attend a nursing application session before you’re eligible. Students should be proactive in working with an academic advisor and nursing program contact throughout this process.

Prerequisites include:

• A CPR/First Aid certification (Red Cross or AHA approved)
• Completion of a Minnesota State–approved Nursing Assistant course or being on the state registry
• Passing scores on the TEAS exam (minimum 60% overall, 70% in reading)
• Courses like English composition, biology, and intro to nursing or health sciences
• Immunizations and a cleared background check
• Placement test results meeting reading, writing, and math benchmarks

Students can apply to the program while still finishing these prerequisites, but they must pass the TEAS exam first. Hennepin Tech caps TEAS attempts at four per year, so planning ahead is important.
